Surfing Essentials in Lombok

When embarking on your Lombok surf adventure, you’ll need to decide whether to hire a surfboard locally or bring your own. Renting can be a practical choice, but if you plan to stay in Lombok for an extended period, purchasing a surfboard from a local surf shop or exploring the options available on platforms such as Facebook Marketplace can be a viable choice.

Lombok is home to several reputable surf shops that cater to the needs of surfers of all levels, such as Flow Surf Store, Boardriders Surf Shop and Surf Lab Lombok.

What else do you need to surf in Lombok?

In the dry season, April to September:

  • Lightweight, breathable spring surf suits (check out our collection of surf suits here) or boardshorts and rash guards. Coming from Bali? Shop our collection at Drifter or essenTIALS Bali. You can also shop online, we deliver to Lombok for free
  • Sustainable and reef-friendly sunscreens that contain zinc. We recommend to check out Salt & Stone

In the wet season, October to March:

  • The wet season might bring cooler water temperatures. If a surf suit or boardies are too cold for you, a good-quality wetsuit will keep you warm. The thickness depends on the water temperature, but a 3/2mm is usually suitable for tropical climates
  • Lombok offers lots of reef breaks so in case the sea floor is rocky or there are sharp objects in the water, booties can protect your feet. They also provide extra warmth
  • Sustainable and reef-friendly sunscreens that contain zinc. We recommend to check out Salt & Stone

Beyond Surfing: Exploring Lombok

Need a break from surfing? Lombok offers hiking opportunities to the summit of Mount Rinjani, trekking through rice terraces in Sembalun, or visiting tranquil islands like the Gili Islands, where snorkeling and diving reveal thriving coral reefs and diverse marine life. Those who are interested in local culture, could visit the traditional Sasak villages. These communities offer a glimpse into the island’s heritage, where time-honored customs, arts and crafts are still practiced.

For those craving an adventure, a visit to the Benang Kelambu and Benang Stokel Waterfalls is a must. Tucked away in the lush greenery of Lombok’s landscape, these cascading waterfalls create a true spectacle as they gush down the rocky cliffs.

After a long day of exploring watch the sunset at Bukit Merese, a scenic hill, located in the southern part of the island. Bukit Merese provides a spectacular vantage point to witness the sun as it dips below the horizon.

Lombok places a strong emphasis on responsible tourism and eco-friendly practices, emphasizing the need to protect its pristine environment and preserve its cultural heritage. When visiting, consider staying in eco-resorts and participating in community-based tourism initiatives that support local economies and eco-conscious projects.

Lombok Plastic Free stands as a beacon of hope amidst the vast challenges posed by plastic pollution in Indonesia. By implementing circular waste management, educating the youth, and engaging in political advocacy, this movement demonstrates the power of collective action. Their commitment to acting local and thinking global, taking small steps, and collaborating with like-minded individuals and organizations serves as an inspiration for others to join the fight against plastic pollution.

Planning Your Lombok Surf Adventure

The prime surfing season on the island typically falls between April and September, coinciding with the dry season. During these months, offshore winds prevail, resulting in clean and consistent swells that create ideal conditions for surfers of all skill levels. If you’re aiming to catch the best waves, consider planning your trip between June and August, when Lombok’s surf spots are at their peak.

To ensure a smooth and enjoyable Lombok surf adventure, consider these travel tips and resources:

  3. Currency and ATMs: The local currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). ATMs are widely available, but it’s advisable to carry some cash.
  4. Transportation: Arrange transportation from Lombok International Airport or the harbor to your chosen surf destination. Taxis, ride-sharing services, and hotel shuttles are convenient options.
  5. Language: Bahasa Indonesia is the official language, but English is spoken in many tourist areas.
  6. Respect Local Culture: Be aware of local customs, particularly when visiting villages. Dress modestly and request permission before taking photos.
  7. Travel Insurance: Consider purchasing travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and unforeseen events.
  8. Surf Equipment: If bringing your surfboard, ensure its adequately protected during travel.
  9. Local Surf Guides: Utilize local surf guides or instructors for insights on wave conditions, tides, and safety.

Your guide to driving a Motorbike in Lombok

The island of Lombok is a fascinating and stunning spot in the Indonesian archipelago that features everything you need for an awesome vacation. With beautiful beaches, epic volcanoes, remote villages and spectacular surf spots, Lombok will leave you with memories of a lifetime that you won’t be able to wait to share with family and friends. While Lombok is one of the popular islands in Indonesia, the infrastructure isn’t quite as advanced as islands like Bali, so you may have a little more difficulty discovering some of the best locations if you rely on public transport or the power of your own two feet! This is where driving a motorbike in Lombok comes in handy! Read on to find out all you need to know about driving a scooter in Lombok.

Why Drive A Scooter In Lombok?

If you want to explore the intriguing island of Lombok to the fullest, you’re best off hiring a scooter so you can have full freedom and flexibility over your travels and where you want to go. While public transport and shuttle services are available in Lombok, they are often not the quickest option and may travel round the houses to pick up and drop off people along the way. Rather than sitting around in travel agents, cafés or on the side of the road for your transfer to arrive, you could be out there exploring with the wind in your hair as you discover Lombok by bike.

Outside of the major towns like Mataram, the roads in Lombok are generally fairly quiet, so you shouldn’t have too much trouble getting around, even if you don’t have that much experience riding a scooter. Once you’ve got to grips with the basics, you can grab a map and head off to explore.

Please note that during the weekends and holidays many Local people are visiting the beaches and waterfalls, so traffic will be more during these days

Driving a scooter in Lombok gives you total control of when and where you want to travel, so you can hit up country roads, quaint villages and secluded coves with complete freedom.

Things To Think About When Hiring A Scooter In Lombok

The rules for hiring a scooter in Lombok are the same as they are the world over, so you’ll want to make sure you follow these basic tips to ensure you don’t have any issues:

  • Give your scooter a proper check before you ride away – making sure you take plenty of pictures and/or videos so you know about any scratches or dents that are already on the bike
  • Take down the number of the rental company as well as the address and return time
  • Check that your insurance policy covers you for riding a scooter abroad
  • Give the scooter a little drive before you set off so you know everything is working alright

You won’t really need to worry about figuring out how to fill up the petrol, as you can easily stop off on the side of the road throughout the island and someone will do it for you! Just look for bottles with blue liquid 😉

What To See When Exploring Lombok By Scooter

Having a scooter in Lombok allows you to get off-the-beaten-track, discovering unknown gems as well as popular spots like beaches, waterfalls and top towns. While you may want to have a vague idea of where you want to go in Lombok, you should also give yourself the option of discovering spots you hadn’t planned on visiting – and hey, you never know, you might just find your new favourite place!

Here are some ideas to get you started:
