Tucked away in Kuta, Lombok, SAME SAME represents more than just a venue. It’s a dream hailing from the charming streets of Belgium that found its soulful place in Indonesia. Dive into the captivating tale of a wanderer, Bart, who turned his dream into a vibrant reality, crafting an oasis that feels remarkably like home.

A Belgian Dream:
In the captivating landscapes of Belgium, young Bart nurtured a dream: to create a travel spot that echoed the warmth and coziness of home. With Belgium’s delightful chocolates and beers close to his heart, the allure of exploring new horizons beckoned him.

The dream materialized first with SAME SAME Bungalows. These enchanting bamboo structures, an epitome of Lombok’s architectural charm, provided travelers with a serene haven. However, after a memorable five-year stint at its original location, SAME SAME Bungalows bid its first adieu.

As the post-COVID era dawned, Bart discerned the shifting needs of travelers. Enter cokreate: a sanctuary for digital nomads, freelancers, and dedicated professionals. Equipped with top-notch amenities, this workspace quickly garnered a loyal following.

Embodying the Essence of Home:
Feedback streamed in, but a common refrain persisted: “This place feels like coming home.” This was the ultimate homage to Bart’s vision. SAME SAME evolved from merely an establishment to a community, a collective.

The Road Ahead:
While SAME SAME has celebrated myriad milestones, its foundational vision endures: to serve as a cherished home away from home. With aspirations of hosting special events, promotions, and intensifying sustainability endeavors, the chronicle of SAME SAME is far from over.

Our restaurant is open in Kuta Lombok

Two weeks ago, we opened our restaurant again after 2 year of closure.
The first week, we were only serving ice cold drinks, juices, beers, our signature teas and coffee.

Since last week, we are also serving a few of our dishes. As pre pandemic, we try to serve food that you cannot find in any other restaurant in Kuta Lombok. Well, most of our dishes you can’t find in Lombok or even entire Indonesia!

Visit us in Kuta Lombok for:

Soup !

At the moment we made our delicious Pumpkin Soup again. The soup is served with bread.

Sandwiches

The sandiches are soft ciabatta bread. In the future, we will have a selection of bread, but for now we chose soft ciabatta bread as this is perfect to create a delicious sandwich.

You can choose the topping:

  1. Tuna Salad
  2. Pulled Chicken
  3. Hummus

The sandwiches in our food café are server with a side salad.

Stew

Stoofvlees / Stoverij / Beefstew. Yes people, this famous Belgian dish is back in Lombok!
Slowly cooked beef stew in premium dark beer. This is a must try !

Chicken stew with a twist. This Belgian / French dish is deliciously refreshing for being a stew. Originally made for the queen of France…

In Belgium we also call this “koninginnenhapje” which literally means “Snack for the queen”

Pasta

Bolognaise… This dish doesn’t require any introduction. But allow us to mention that we take our time making this dish. We let it simmer for 3 – 4 hours, this way all flavors are perfectly combined. We also add red wine for even more flavor!

Green creamy pesto. Are you tired of those to much oil green looking pesto on your pasta? We have got you covered.

We make our pesto with avocados, basil and rucola.
Of course there are other ingredients, but no cheese, making this perfect for vegans.

This week we will add a few dishes to our menu, so feel free to pop in and try them all!

Visit our restaurants website for the full menu and all information.

Walk in the garden

Today I walked in our garden and took some pictures. After two years, everything has grown and even now with the dry season everything is green and lush. It does look a bit messy at the moment, but our gardeners started to work hard in it.

In a few weeks, you will be able to stay in our Bamboo Bungalows and tipi tents. Waking up to bird songs and walking to the shared bathroom in our lush garden.

We hope to be welcoming you soon at our accommodation in Kuta Lombok!

Soon re-opening

After 23 months of being closed, we are no getting ready to re-open again. At the moment we are doing the giant cleanup and also some small renovations and improvements.

SAME SAME Hangout

Our bar will open foodless for the first few weeks/months, depending on supply and demand. Have you been eating at SAME SAME Hangout before and you want to enjoy one of our specialty dishes? Please do send us a message and we will prepare the dish for you!

SAME SAME Bungalows

Our bungalows will be open by 1st of august. Set in the back of our garden, you will be able to enjoy a good night in our bungalows of luxury tents ! Because we want our ecological footprint to be as small as possible, the bathroom is shared.

For 8 people, there is 2 toilets and 2 hot showers. This should be plenty !

In addition to this, we also found that there is a need for a few new things.

SAME SAME Bungalows part 2

Two of our Bamboo bungalows will be in a private part of the garden. In addition to two bungalows, there will also be a living and bathroom area. So you will be able to enjoy our bungalows in your own tropical garden!

  • 2 Bamboo Bungalows
  • Private bathroom / toilet
  • Kitchen
  • Dining area
  • Sofa with TV

SAME SAME House

As at the moment, we are not able to be in Lombok full time, we also decided to do some renovations on our house, after those are completed, we will be renting our house also. Trust me, you will love it !

SAME SAME Co-working

Set behind the door of our reception, we are also preparing a co-working space with AC and desks. You will be able to work in all comfort and this area will be accessible 24/7 when you have a weekly or monthly membership!

Needless to say that we are making sure that the internet will be excellent.

We hope to welcome you very soon !

The History of coworking space

The choice to open a coworking space in Lombok was an obvious and easy one. At SAME SAME, we have proud ourselves with having the best and most reliable internet on the island of Lombok. When during the pandemic, we saw a change in how people work and travel, we decided to transform one of our spaces into a co-working space.

Before opening our coworking space, we did our due diligence. The history of coworking space is part of this. Since it was interesting, we decided to post it on our website.

1995 – the first “coworking” space was actually founded by hackers in Berlin.  The idea was to share thoughts, space and information to complete tasks to those who joined the membership. Presently, they have added seminars, classes and a variety of social events, helping with the trend to open up more community spaces.  There are hackerspaces in San Francisco, Santa Clara and Brooklyn and they keep growing.

1995 – The word  “coworking” was first used by Bernard DeKoven, who described it as “working together as equals.”  Individuals who are self-employed or working for different employers but , can share ideas with tools and coordinated meetings through a computer network. A space opened up in New York that same year by a software company with a flexible desk setting.

2002 – The first coworking space opened up in Schraubenfabrik, Vienna, in an old renovated factory, which began as a community center for enterprises.  It expanded to include freelancers and other professionals working with cell phones and laptops. The spaces continued to grow and function under the name of Konnex Communities in 2004 – the commencement to the local network of coworking spaces.

2005 – San Francisco hosts the first coworking space in August by Brad Neuberg – he believed that home offices and business centers were unsocial and unproductive.  The space offered desks, free wifi, shared lunches, bike tours, meditation and massages closing at 5:45 PM sharp. It closed after a year and replaced in 2006 under the name of the Hat Factory. London opened up 40 coworking spaces by a franchise network on five different continents.  In Germany, St. Oberholz opened up its first cafes in Berlin and offered free internet.  Presently, St. Oberholz offers a true coworking space above its cafe.

2006 – Coworking Wiki space opens up in San Francisco.  Chris Messina, who created the Twitter hashtag, is one of the co-founders. The first full-time coworking space opens at the Hat Factory.  Co-founders are Brad Neuber, Chris Messina and Tara Hunt. At this time, it was one out of about 30 coworking spaces throughout the world. Jellies opened where groups can exchange ideas in a relaxed atmosphere, without  a commitment – the community can later develop into a coworking space if they wish.

2007 – The first time the word “coworking” is seen on Google’s database.  The searches have increased tremendously. The term coworking has become a megamedia name. “Coworking” got into the English version of Wikipedia.

2008/2009 – Unofficial coworking meet-ups happen and planned the first Coworking conference in Brussels in 2010. In August, the Coworking Visa is cultivated- allowing members of various coworking spaces to visit other spaces for free. Cubes & Crayons was the first coworking space to open alongside the facilities for children a few months old to preschoolers. At year’s end in 2008, there were approximately 160 coworking spaces worldwide.

2009 – Germany opens Betahaus, the first official coworking space and was noted in the largest new magazine, the Spiegel.  In 2010, Germany is known to be the first country in Europe to use the term “coworking”, pursuant to Google trends.

2010 – The first #CoworkingDay was celebrated by the movement. The first European coworking conference took place in Brussels.  At this time, there were at least 600 coworking spaces worldwide, with more than half located in North America.

2011 – The first “Coworking Unconference” was located in Austin, Texas.  Angel funding starts for a network of spaces. Large companies began to explore the coworking idea and opened their own chain of coworking spaces specializing in corporate coworking.

2012 –  Coworking spaces worldwide adds up to more than 2,000 established.  Media outlets such as twitter have a huge increase of tweets (over 50%) with hashtag “coworking” – more than the prior year.

2013 – As many as 100,000 members worked at a coworking space at the beginning of the year.  Mid-year, the 3,000th coworking space is founded. Most of the coworking spaces run independent of networks. In an Ontario coworking space, they offered the first health insurance plan.

2015 – The New York Times writes about a new idea that sees coworking mixing with the home office at a resort or hotel.  The story is, “Co-Working on Vacation: A Desk in Paradise”. The main idea of the story is combining coworking and coliving on Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands – a surfing destination.  The Surf Office was born, originally opened two years earlier as an experiment, making it a place attractive to freelancers, surfers and travelers.

2016 – Coworking and coliving idea broadened.  WeWork offered residential coliving in New York City, named WeLive.  The units are mostly studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom – all have a private kitchen and at least one private bathroom.  They are typically furnished, decorated and set up with cable, also internet move-in ready. They also have a community manager to plan events, etc. New York and California Campus coliving closes its 34 locations.

2017 – WeWork raises funding and becomes the most highly valued US private tech companies and its company is Uber and AirBnB.  Valued at $20 Billion. 1.2 million people worldwide would have worked at a coworking space.

2018– As of 2018, the market has a variety of huge players that are giving WeWork a run for its money. Coworking franchises such as Impact hub, Venture X, and Serendipity are expanding throughout the space.

2019 – WeWork had an unsuccessful IPO attempt with SoftBank causing WeWork’s valuation to drop from 49 billion to 8 billion allowing SoftBank to seize control of the company and fire its management team.

2019-2020 New coworking platforms are rising to the scene to filll the void between coworking software, spaces, and remote workers.

2022 – SAME SAME in Lombok is opening their first coworkingspace

See you soon !

Fast wifi in kuta lombok

When I was traveling 10 years ago, internet was a luxury. Nowadays, internet is everywhere. Well, this is actually only the case if you are okay with having a 56k like connection.
The truth is when traveling in Asia – or anywhere else -, especially Parediseey places, having a good internet connection in paradise is also a luxury.

4G and soon 5G is a great help, it’s awesome ! However, this mobile connection is pretty unreliable and can be easily disrupted by rain, wind and concrete housing 😀

At SAME SAME, I made the choice of providing to all visitors and guests, the best possible Fast WiFi in Lombok. Was I successful in the setup?

Yes Yes and Yes

We have several modem setups, that either work as primary or secondary internet connection. All connected to a load balancing router and business grade access points. I will spare you the further details of the setup.

The result is that at SAME SAME we do have the fastest WiFi in Lombok. It’s actually triple the speed then the highest single fiber connection that you can get in Lombok.

349 Mbps on average, in Paradise, not bad, right !

The speeds are limited per device to ensure everyone get’s their fair share. So you will receive 7 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload speeds. To slow you say, well if that speed would have to be shared among multiple people and devices, hell yeah, then it is to slow.

10 Mbps download and 2 Mbps upload is the speeds on most modems in Lombok.

THOSE SPEEDS HAVE TO BE SHARED WITH EVERYONE CONNECTED TO IT !

You are always welcome to pass by and try to slow the internet down… But I did run a speed test with 10 devices downloading and uploading 10 Gigabyte of data… And all had 6.4 Mbps down and 3.8 upload.

So, fast WiFi in Kuta Lombok? Reality at SAME SAME.

Update July 2022

We are working on our own co-working space in Kuta Lombok. As of August 2022, you will be able to go in our cowork space whenever you want to start working. Members will have 24/7 access to the desk and meeting area. Remote workers and digital nomads are of course still welcomed to hangout in our bar even without membership!

Check here for more information about our co-working space !
